Chile Lime Tequila Popcorn….from heaven

chile lime tequila popcorn
I’m enamoured with Kelly’s fabulous blog Eat Make Read. Just look at this amazing popcorn recipe. I definitely want to make it and have a movie party at my apartment. I feel like once I make it I’ll get some ideas for other kinds of crazy popcorns to make. Wouldn’t it be fun to challenge guests to each bring a homemade/made-up popcorn to a movie party? You could have a little tasting with some prosecco. I think prosecco would go well. Or make it the real movie experience and have soda?

from 101 cookbooks | Make 4 quarts of popcorn

4 quarts freshly popped popcorn*
1/3 cup butter, melted
2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1/2 teaspoon lime zest
1 teaspoon tequila
1/2 small jalapeno, seeds and membrane removes, minced
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon ground cumin

Preheat the oven to 300F degrees.

  1. Line a baking sheet with foil or a silicone baking mat (hs note: or unbleached parchment paper). Set aside.
  2. Put the popcorn in a large, clean paper bag (I used a ziploc).
  3. In a medium-size bowl whisk together the butter, lime juice and zest, and tequila. Add the jalapeno.
  4. In a small bowl combine the black pepper, salt, red pepper, and cumin.
  5. Drizzle half of the butter mixture over the popcorn, fold over the top of the bag, and shake until the popcorn is coated and moist. Taste. Add more of the butter mixture if you like, and give a second shake. Sprinkle (most of) the pepper mixture over the popcorn, fold over the top of the bag, and shake a few times to coat. Taste, and if you’d like more pepper flavor add the rest of it.
  6. Spread the popcorn evenly over the baking sheet and bake until the popcorn is dry, five to seven minutes.

*To pop 4 quarts of popcorn, heat 1/4 cup clarified butter, coconut oil, or olive oil in a deep pot over medium heat. Add a few kernels to the pot. Once they pop, add 3/4 cup popcorn kernels and shake the pot until they cover the pot evenly. Cover the pot and shake intermittently until the popping slows to 5 seconds between pops. Remove the popcorn from heat and transfer it to whatever bag you are going to use for tossing.

Spring wish list: Alexis Bittar, Virginia Johnson, Philip Crangi, Hable Construction, & APC

Spring wish list
Really enjoyed Brooklyn this weekend. Lovely weather for walking around (with an umbrella today). Saw some daffodils popping up. I’m hungry for spring.

Trying not to buy lots of stuff, but if I could buy anything, here’s what I’d pick up:

  1. Alexis Bittar Lucite Sand Dollar Earrings
  2. Virginia Johnson Dress
  3. Philip Crangi ring from Erie Basin
  4. Hable Construction Tote
  5. APC Wooden Heel Sandals in blue (also available here)

I hope you all had a lovely weekend? Is spring happening around your neighborhood?

Jet set: Our California trip

We had such an incredible time in Cali. Went all over the place: San Diego, La Jolla, Joshua Tree, Palm Springs. Below are a few pictures we snapped, there are more on flickr. We love California. It’s our favorite place to visit in America. Paris would be our favorite international destination.

Now we’re back in lovely Brooklyn. There is nowhere we’d rather live. Sometimes we toss the idea of moving someplace new around. We imagine what it would be like to have more space and a less hectic lifestyle. I would love not commuting on the subway. However at heart we’re New Yorkers. Both of us were born here and Brooklyn is just a dream place to live. It’s full of ambitious, creative people, fantastic restaurants, and lots of coffee shops. We just like the energy of the place. We’d certainly be happy with shorter winters and more trees though. That’s why we’ll jet off to Cali when we can. It’s chilly here but spring is just around the corner, I can see the signs popping out all around the neighborhood.

Where the Wild Things Are: Movie Trailer

It’s a classic. Everyone grew up with Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are“. I love the story and illustrations so much it hurts. I read it every year to my second grade art students. Then they each design their own wildthing and we make life-size paper sculptures. If there’s time they draw a comic about a day in the life of their wildthing.

By now, I know the story by heart. It’s one of my favorites to read aloud, or at this point recite.

When I got a glimpse of this Spike Jonze movie trailer I lost my breath. I actually cried a little. I got really nostalgic I suppose. It could be how connected with childhood this story makes me feel. I can’t wait to see this. I just can’t wait.

Directed by Spike Jonze. Starring Catherine Keener (favorite actress), Max Records, Mark Ruffalo, Lauren Ambrose, and James Gandolfini. Where the Wild Things Are opens October 16th.

p.s I love that Arcade Fire song so much. It’s perfect with the trailer.
