Will Cotton: Delicious Paintings

Will Cotton

will cotton2
I first learned of Will Cotton while taking figurative oil painting at the NY Academy of art. The training there is really technical, literally we learned to match every single brush stroke/color to a photograph so that we could convey light and shadow correctly. I found it rather tedious. I learned a lot but never do oil anymore. It’s funny that I spent my whole education and beyond focused on opaque media and now that I work as an illustrator professionally only use transparent. I just love the immediacy of it!

Anyway I’m madly deeply in love with Will Cotton’s work. His paint application is so skillful and his subject matter so enticing. He reminds me of Wayne Thiebaud and Lisa Yuskavage rolled into one.

Happy 32

32

Over the weekend we went to a birthday party for our friend Mike. He turned….you guessed it…32. He took his yearly birthday portraits of  friends. He’s been doing it for 5 years now, I think. Happily this was Henry‘s first year in the portraits. He was a little fussy because he missed his nap to attend the party. Hopefully Mike got a good shot of him for the project. Either way, we enjoyed some delicious coconut cake baked by his girlfriend Hannah!

FYI, I did this drawing in watercolor and then overlayed it on a black ground for Mike’s card.

Map it

One of my best friends in the world (going on 18 years+) asked me to illustrate a map for her wedding invitation insert. I was super duper honored because she has the best aesthetic sense of anyone I know. I love her so much!

Not only was I thrilled to accept her request to illustrate this map but I’m honored to be one of her bridesmaids too. She asked me earlier today and since then I’ve had extra pep in my step. So lucky to have a friends like her. We have a little group that grew up together and to this day it’s like we’re in middle school when we hang out.

Do you have girlfriends like that? They’re irreplaceable! Tell them so and have a fabulous weekend! XO.
