These photos at first glance look like beautiful abstractions. In reality the beautiful textures and shapes are tree nurseries and grid forests in the Netherlands. Dutch photographer Gerco de Ruijter takes aerial photographs called Baumschule.

In Ruijter’s words:

“How abstract can a landscape become while remaining a landscape?” de Ruijter asked himself. “I tried to find the answer to this question during extended travels, by searching for a fully natural landscape, not manmade, and lacking any cultural presence. I found these ‘natural-born’ sites in New Mexico—deserts formed by rocks and sand and all forms of erosion. A barren landscape, too, with scarce vegetation.”

A Communal Table: Caroline Hwang’s amazing cookbook

book
preview02
I’m so excited to tell you about illustrator Caroline Hwang‘s latest genius project.

In her own words:

Introducing the first in a series of cookbooks that celebrates the joys of gathering together to share a meal. A delicious spread isn’t the only thing that makes a meal memorable, it’s also the people you eat it with and this series revels in both. In the introductory book, the casual gathering is explored by accomplished home chefs and some of the best-known folks at the front of the foodie revolution who offer delectable menus for a ladies brunch, a mid-week dinner, a rustic meal, and more.

Proceeds from the first book will be donated to The Food Trust, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that educates families and the public about healthy nutrition.

Check out Caroline’s other amazing projects:

  1. Numnum Chronicles
  2. Supper Club, an underground restaurant
  3. The Space in-between blog

I’ve been lucky enough to sample Caroline’s amazing cooking. She and her roommate have hosted some amazing brunches at their apartment.

We’re all feeling sad around here. Missing our pooch. It will take us time to adjust. I’m trying to look for things to be cheerful about. Having a healthy and happy husband and baby is a good reason to smile.

Thought I’d share this pattern today. I made it when days were brighter.

I’m sad to say that our dog passed away over the weekend. We’re dealing with it knowing she had a long and happy life. Here’s a nice photo of her on a summer day.
