I was so happy to receive some copies of this beautiful new Chronicle book that my work is on the cover and inside of. It features a range of artists who employ various watercolor techniques in their commercial and fine art work. If you love art and/or are interested in the mysterious medium that is watercolor this is a must see. I’m so honored to be included.

Here are a few spreads featuring my work (there are more–so pick up the book to see). There are also some images of our workspaces. I’m always curious to see other artist’s drawing tables.

Happy to be in the company of Virginia Johnson and Sujean Rim (my predecessor at Daily Candy) amongst other great artists.

Lavender wall

I have not embarked on any home decor projects since we moved into our apartment a year and a half ago. In fact I’ve been so lax about doing anything after all the painting and moving in that we’ve been looking at a gaping space on the wall above our couch for over 6 months since we removed a big mirror hanging there thinking it could somehow spontaneously fall on someone’s head (unlikely but not worth the risk).

I’ve been trying to think of what to put there. I had a picture I made up for a little while and then took it down. I was thinking of blowing up a photo but never got to it. After seeing Rubi Jones’ studio wall I got inspired by the idea of a flower wall. I decided to use something meaningful, sweet smelling and at the same time something I happened to already have, the lavender we picked last summer on the North Fork. It was super easy to arrange into the composition I liked using washi tape (clear with pale green stripes) to hold the stems in place. Might be nice to add some pops of yellow with camomile or something. Perhaps I’ll get to it someday!?

Juergen Teller: Woo!

Juergen Teller, one of my favorite contemporary artists is having a retrospective at ICA in London.

ICA describes Teller as: One of the most important photographers of his generation, Juergen Teller is one of a few artists who has been able to operate successfully both in the art world and the world of commercial photography. This exhibition will provide a seamless journey through his landmark fashion and commercial photography from the 90s, presenting classic images of celebrities such as Lily Cole, Kurt Cobain and Vivienne Westwood, as well as more recent landscapes and family portraits.

I find his images so alluring in their juxtaposition of intentionality and naturalism.

More on Teller from ICA: Teller’s provocative interventions in celebrity portraiture subvert the conventional relationship of the artist and model. Whatever the setting, all his subjects collaborate in a way that allows for the most surprising poses and emotional intensity. Driven by a desire to tell a story in every picture he takes, Teller has shaped his own distinct and instantly recognisable style which combines humour, self-mockery and an emotional honesty.

Wish I could jet off to London and take in the images in person. Here are some images from the show if you can’t make it.

Braided Chignon

The talented Rubi Jones and I collaborated again! Rubi came up with 4 simple steps to create a stunning braided chignon for an Oh Happy Day event hosted by Jordan Ferney. I was happy to illustrate Rubi’s genius for Jordan to letterpress with lovely gray and a pop of red.
