Being out west all summer, in Seattle and now in San Francisco, has been really really amazing. We’ve been questioning where we want to spend the next phase of life and hemming and hawing over Brooklyn versus one of the aforementioned west coast cities with their temperate climates and idyllic natural settings a skip hop from urban centers.

Still, there’s a piece of my heart looking forward to returning to the hustle and bustle capitol of the universe, New York City. There’s no place like it and while we wrangle with it sometimes, other times we’re in love with its merits.

I’ll be back to my normal life on Monday, posting from my desk in New York. I hope you have a wonderful end to your summer.

Check out my book, which came out Tuesday, if you have not already.

We’re in San Francisco for the week before heading back to NYC. I’m seeing lots of great SF folk including my wonderful Chronicle Books team. My book comes out tomorrow..eek. “Like” the Facebook page if you would like updates including the invitation to my book launch event at Rizzoli on 57th St. on the evening of September 19th.

Here are some recent photos I took. I love the silvery morning light over the bay.:

Home is where the family is

home is where the family is
The word “home” is so interesting. It’s amazing how the definition can shift and change. We’ve been in Seattle all summer. When it’s time to leave the playground I tell Henry “let’s go home”. He knows that we don’t permanently live in Seattle but understands what I mean by “home”. It’s where we are staying. Even when we are staying in a hotel for a weekend, the same term applies. Where the family is, is truly home.

Being here has gotten us thinking about what we want out of our home going forward. We love our apartment in Manhattan but absolutely loathe our neighborhood. It’s dearth of green space, disturbing traffic and fire truck clamor and lack of friendly neighborhood vibe get us down. Somehow our eyes opened and we know we need to make a change, not only for Henry but for ourselves.

We’re going to San Francisco for a week (leaving tomorrow) and then heading back to New York City. We’re at a crossroads. We want to find a home for Henry in a welcoming environment with space for him to breathe and grow. We wonder if we’ll drastically change the place we call home and go west to San Francisco or go back to Brooklyn. Either way, as long as we’re together, home is there.

Above is a little watercolor lettering piece I did a while back.
