Happy Holidays!

flamingo beach2

I want to wish you all a truly beautiful holiday. I hope you surround yourselves with loved ones and enjoy a bit of a respite from your usual hectic lives.

We’ll be packing up our apartment, getting ready to move back to Brooklyn on January 9th. I’m dreading the packing but look forward to our new space. It has amazing light and is in a lovely quiet hood. I’ll share photos on instagram over the holiday week if you want to see what it looks like before our things move in (we just had it painted).

It feels fitting that we’ll be moving right as one year turns into the next. I always think of new years as a time for change, a time to deeply reflect on where I’ve been and where I’d like to be.

My goal for 2014 is to be grateful for where I already am, what I already have and to relish the moments that make up my life. I’ll still have goals but I don’t want them to trample the life that’s happening in the moment.

I’ve been feeling more and more compelled to try different things in my work lately which is why I was thrilled to do the Paris Review and the Apartment Therapy work. I don’t know what these patterns are for yet but I’m having a ball working this way.

Ok, I’ll sign off until after the holidays. Check out some posts you may have missed, below.

This morning at 9AM my friend (the incredibly talented prop stylist) Randi Brookman Harris and I had an artist date at David Zwirner gallery. We waited in line (in the freezing cold) almost 3 hours to experience the incredible mirrored infinity room (totally worth it). Only one person could enter the room at a time which made the experience completely immersive. Unfortunately due to the volume of viewers each person only gets 45 seconds. It would take at least 15 minutes to experience the exhibit in full. I wish I could have more time.

“Infinity Mirrored Room –
The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away encompasses a cube-shaped, mirror-paneled room that features a shallow reflecting
pool as its floor. Hundreds of multicolored LED lights are suspended at varying heights from the ceiling. They flicker on and
off in a strobe-like effect, producing an intense illumination of the space and a repetitive pattern of reflections that suggest
endlessness and ultimately invoke concepts of life and death.”

We also enjoyed the paintings. I could not help but liken them to Fauve painters, African, Mexican and Peruvian textiles…all the while somehow being completely original. It was interesting to look at them from a distance and to explore details up close. Randi was smitten with all of the little faces. I was drawn to the two color pieces, with a bright color over bronze or opposing primary and secondary colors. Kusama’s palettes are completely compelling and unusual with vibrating colors that seem to emanate straight from the tube. I’d love to watch a time lapse of her creating these.

Here are my instagram snaps + Randi’s

Have a great weekend. If you are around NY. I’d highly recommend the exhibit. Get there early or be prepared for an up to 4 hour wait.

The Glow: An Inspiring Guide to Stylish Motherhood

Throughout life there are rare opportunities to make friends and even more rare opportunities to make those friendships grow into something more. I have a handful of women in my life who I was lucky enough to meet when we were around 11 years old. Life has been an incredible journey and it’s been an absolute pleasure knowing these girls as we became women. Describing them as friends is too meek a term, they’re family.

One of these girls is Violet, the co-founder of The Glow. I’ve always been in awe of Violet, her accomplishments, talent, beauty and kindness. She recently became a mother to a beautiful little baby girl, Plum. I instantly loved her. Holding her for the first time, I was filled with love. I’m happy to consider her another member of my family as I know Violet considers me and my son Henry.

I was honored to make this sweet little poem into a watercolor picture for sweet little Plum in their lovely home–featured in this Glow shoot for JCrew at Violet, David and Plum’s apartment.
