Beach dreaming

4 summer dreaming
I’ve recently been playing around with a new, non-watercolor style. I use thin point pens and brush pens to create a black outline drawing and then color digitally and overlay some watercolor details. I thought this new 80’s style summer lovin’ illustration was a fitting way to end the week. I’m thrilled it’s summer. We’ve been hopping a train almost every weekend and spending the day at the beach. It’s heaven, the waves lapping on the shore, white sand, sand castles and peanut butter sandwiches. Have a lovely weekend!

Summer dreaming: Rachel Comey

Comey dreams
I’m beyond happy to be in Brooklyn for the summer. No more commuting 4.5 year old Henry to pre-school in Manhattan. We’re living a neighborhoody life full of work, play, dreaming and of course frozen yogurt. It’ll be our last summer as a three person family. Baby Vivian is due in September. That’s not stopping me from dreaming about what I would wear if I were not 7 months pregnant!

This Rachel Comey Glinda Jumpsuit is straight from my fashion dreams.

These Rio sandals, also Comey are the perfect combo of stunning and comfortable.

I’ve had the pleasure of illustrating the Paris Review this year, lending my illustrations to Rachel Cusk’s novel Outline (being published in serial) now in it’s third installment. The first was issue 207, I even illustrated the cover on that one! 208 was the winter issue and 209 just came out with the most delightful cover ever by Raymond Pettibon. It’s on my coffee table and I can’t subdue a smile each time I pass it by. Here are a few of the illos from the latest issue. Grab it from your favorite bookstore today or subscribe.

I’m so excited for my talented friend Eloise Corr Danch. Her most recent project is showing her gorgeous paper flower sculptures in this summer group exhibition titled FLOWERING at Nancy Margolis Gallery in Chelsea, NYC.

June 19 – August 1, 2014
Opening reception 6/19/2014 6-8pm (tonight!)

FLOWERING defined literally is a plant in bloom, metaphorically rich, in full stage of development. The paintings by the eight accomplished artists in this exhibition fit these definitions, and were selected for their engaging personal expression, and styles. Their genre, unalike and varied, runs from realism, abstraction, narration, decoration, patterning, and embellishment. Flowers throughout history have been a universal mode of expression to convey feelings of love, grief, forgiveness, pleasure, joy, and celebration, so it is fascinating to see how each artist in his and her individual voice integrates the FLOWERING theme into their work.
