What a gorgeous day it is. It feels like the perfect summer day with the tiniest hints of autumn. It’s Henry’s last day of camp and I’m less than a week away from my due date with Vivian so I’m just tying up loose ends before she comes. Sometimes I think when people are in prenatal mode (ehem, people like us) they act as though they’re preparing for the post-apocalypse. Life does drastically change but it’s not as though we’ll never be able to do anything ever again. I have to remind myself that I’ll be able to work (even though it may be hard at first), I’ll sleep again someday, and have a date with my husband. Right now it seems like a tornado is coming. I am excited to meet my little daughter though. I don’t know what we’ll do this weekend, our last as a 3 person family. I hope, if the weather’s nice to spend lots of time outdoors soaking up the last drop of summer. I wish you the best summer weekend of them all.

Fall wish list

fall wish list

I’m a week away from my due date, give or take of course! I have been so focused on finishing projects that I’ve done very little nesting (I have filled Vivian’s drawers with newborn clothing and blankets and diapers though). My husband is super on top of all the big stuff. He built the bassinet and swing and filled in any blanks on baby products we didn’t save from when Henry was a little one. This morning after cleaning up my studio. I took down boxes of post-partum fall and winter clothing and put them back in my closet. After wearing the same 5 things all summer it was exciting to say hello to old favorite blouses and jeans. I just hope I shrink to a normal size fast. I have vowed to pick up jogging as soon as I recover from the delivery.

I don’t have too much on my wish list for fall but truly need a new cross-body purse. I’m obsessed with the Celine Trio but even on Ebay it’s out of my price range. The Claire Vivier cross-body above is a beauty and expensive but I use the same purse everyday and have had a similar Marc Jacobs one for over 5 years now. I’m definitely a creature of habit. I have the Rachel Comey Mars boot in gunmetal gray and they’re my favorite booties. I’d love to grab a pair in whiskey. I know I’d wear them all the time with jeans and even skirts.

The last item on my list is really exciting to me. I originally wanted two nameplace necklaces with Henry and Vivian’s initials on them then I hung with my friend Natalie of Hey Natalie Jean who has a tattoo on her arm of her son Huck’s b’day (which is the same as my Henry’s incidentally). Instead of numbers she has it in roman numerals. I love it so much that I’ve been chatting with my friend Anna of Brevity jewelry to put together a double chain necklace of Henry and Vivian’s birthdays in roman numerals. Of course I have to figure out the perfect sans serif font and wait to find out Vivian’s birthday but this is something I’d plan to wear nearly everyday….forever! I’ll show you how it turns out when it’s on my neck!

  1. Claire Vivier: Moyen Messenger in oxblood (I’d love to have it monogrammed with my initials)
  2. Rachel Comey: Mars boot in whiskey
  3. Brevity necklace: I’d get a custom one in a sans serif font in 14K gold with my kid’s birthdays in roman numerals

Happy Monday

What gorgeous weather we’re getting. I’m feeling so lucky that we’re in Brooklyn this summer. The streets are tree-lined and quiet and I’m only a week away from having a baby so am beyond thrilled not to have one of those scorching hot summers with burning pavement and honking horns below my studio window.

Here are a few more patterns I made from some playful doodling I did alongside Henry the other day. I just picked sections of each doodle and made elements to be repeated. I like the effects I got just using his kid’s watercolor set and oil pastels on manila paper. Sometimes the cheapest materials yield interesting results.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the week. So many people we know are going out of town this week. I guess everyone’s realizing that summer is slipping away and relishing a last little bit of relaxation and fun before the fall and winter slog begins.

Bright Lab: Colorful cotton string lights

bright lab2
bright lab The ever talented Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day! recently launched a new company that sells gorgeous, colorful cotton lights. Welcome to the world Bright Lab. I’m actually obsessed and kind of want more than one set. I am definitely getting some for our new baby (coming in 2 weeks). We just don’t know her color scheme yet. Isn’t that strange of me to give each of my children their own color scheme? It may sound odd but I kind of love it for Henry. Orange is the main color I pick for him from a rocking chair to a sun hat and then accent colors of birch, white and black. I don’t know what Vivian’s colors will be yet but I am definitely getting her a strand of these beauties. I’m in love with both the sorbet set and the metallic.

You can follow Bright Lab on facebook and instagram too.

I’ve been hunkering down, trying to finish all of my commercial projects in time for the baby’s arrival in 2 weeks. EEK! Luckily, I’m in good shape and turning everything in on time…with time to spare just in case Vivian decides to make an early appearance. I am usually really happy with client driven projects but can’t help but feel compelled sometimes to do my own thing. Usually abstractions are a great way to play with color and just feel free as compared with my commercial work that’s often about the figure and in my watercolor style.

The other day Henry and I were drawing together with some of his oil pastels and other materials on simple manila and newsprint paper. I was just playing around and decided to scan some of the playful designs I worked on and create these patterns.
