Maquette’s guide to Indie Fashion/Beauty/Style/Art Mags.

indie mags
I love the big glossies but there’s something about an independent magazine that’s special. Indies are always turning over stones to find the undiscovered flower. Plus they’re so fresh and current.

I made a little list below of some of my favorites. The first four are the images above. See, as promised, nothing about patterns today!! You don’t know how hard it is for my not to post the new ones I’m working on. Oh one more thing before I list the mags, I got my first official etsy order today from a lovely fashion blogger! Check her out.

Now for my list of mags:

  1. N.E.E.T
  2. Lovely (I might be doing an illo for their next issue!)
  3. Indie
  4. Fashion 156 (I did a couple of illos for their latest issue)
  5. Metro Pop
  6. A4
  7. 10
  8. Bon
  9. Sesame (I think they might be done : ( though)
  10. Ruby

Brocades & Barcodes. Plus, a little link love for Kitsune Noir, Matthew Newton, and Skinny La Minx.

*I feel unconstrained when I do more illustrative designs but I want to do some takes on tradition too. I just completed this bright chartreuse pattern making a little collection of three brocade-esq designs. I made another for a little wall mural I just did on my friend’s wall. I’ll take a picture of that later.

In the meantime, you must check out this blog by Matthew Newton I just discovered via another favorite read-see of mine: Kitsune Noir. Both run by very cool boys. Matthew was lovely and added a link to my art site in his informer section. Thanks Matthew! Oh and do check out his/his wife’s very cool etsy shop, a collection of vintage housewares. I better tell Heather of Skinny La Minx in case she needs more mugs for reference or tea. Congrats to her for winning the coolest blog in S.A. award!

Tomorrow I promise you a post that has nothing to do with pattern. How about that?! I get pretty myopic when I’m excited about something huh?

Launch! A new pattern section on my website now exists. Plus, prints of my work are now in an Etsy shop!

prints & patterns

I’m thrilled to announce that my patterns are now on my site. I have many more in the works but I wanted to get it all rolling so tada! Thank you Dave for setting that up. I also finally got my Etsy shop up and running! I need some help readers, I’m looking to have samples made of my work, some fabric, wallpaper, wrapping paper, dishes, pillows…stuff like that. If anyone knows someone that could help with that or might want to collaborate let me know please.

Now, I have to say a few thank yous. I’ll make it brief. Mary Jo Matsumoto who I’ve done illustration work for ordered some prints from me, which planted the idea in my mind that I should make a shop. Shortly after that, Anna saw my work and posted it on her Absolutely Beautiful Things blog which lives up to it’s name. She also ordered a print! Then, Holly of Decor8 ( a wealth of beauty and inspiration) saw that and posted a flattering commentary on my art/ordered a couple of prints. Then, Erin of Design For Mankind (finding beauty in everything) saw Holly’s post and posted her favorite pieces of mine and ordered some prints too. I love the piggy-backing.

I can’t go into a whole flowery diatribe about these incredible women cause you’d be reading all day, but I must say that I admire them on so many levels. They not only maintain inspirational blogs & do inspirational things in their lives, but they have also made themselves accessible on so many levels. I’ve shared so many emails with them. I ask for a little feedback and they give me great gems of wisdom. I value their friendships and mentoring so much, I just had to post my thanks here. I really want to make a go of this pattern thing and I had no real idea where to begin, now I have a direction though it’s daunting. The ladies have provided me with a real support, a community that makes me feel very lucky to be an artist/blogger and have gotten to know them. I just wish they all lived here so I could thank them with a big dinner and dessert party at my place. That’s an open invite to come to Brooklyn!

Little announcements and a sneak peak at my new Etsy shop.

Fashion156
Little news, announcements, and links to share:

  1. A site and blog I adore, Orange Beautiful and it’s blog The Scoop posted about my patterns.
  2. I have some illustrations in the new issue of Fashion156. I’m so happy that they accompany Susie Bubble‘s writing.

Plus, a mini preview launch…my Etsy shop is up and running! I’m going to announce it more loudly later when I launch the new pattern section on my site I have not even told any of my most supportive blog friends. I’m finishing up a couple of designs for it.

YEAH! I can’t wait to share. I’ve been working my ass off and neglecting all chores to my husband/web master’s dismay. The pooch is giving me the cold shoulder too. It’ll be exciting to get that going though then I can try to make it up to all who I’ve been neglecting.

Marcel Dzama: Dark art.

Marcel Dzama

I’m fascinated by Canadian artist Marcel Dzama’s work. There is a real dichotomy between the darkness and how inviting his delicate lines are. At first glance, his images are friendly almost graphic novel-esq. There are creatures, ghosts and characters interacting with humans doing things. He creates a universe where animals, spirits, and creatures co-exist. The humans have benign looks on their faces in the midst of nightmarish situations. Dzama’s ability create these narrative pieces with such a subtlety that the viewer has to go beyond the surface image and confront fear is masterful. The more I look at these pictures, the more symbolism I see. Take a peek. His work is here. He recently had a show here.

*I’ve been working like mad to get my pattern portfolio together and I’m about to launch a new section on my site. I’ll post my new patterns this week! I just learned the software I needed to make the work into actual repeats for wallpaper, textiles, and other surfaces. Can’t wait to launch.
